Katigbawasan falls: Nature bestowed gift Camiguin

After the long journey to get to this island from Cagayan de Oro, at last we have arrived at Balingoan port, Misamis Oriental , we are  half way going to Camiguin now, I said to myself.

Spending your time in the seaport  while waiting for the next trip seems boring right? But in Balingoan it isn’t. Interesting sight filled the scene, it’s like an appetizer in a full course as it is said. Feast your eyes with this random shoots .

The scenes were tasteful and tempting. My feet are getting etcher as we cruise and excited to set foot on this Island born of fire , Camiguin.  Benoni port from my view deck is just a few minutes away. Gosh, my heart is beating fast and white tiny water are spourting fast. Too excited for this adventure, I bet!

The day is perfect in wandering around this tiny island, the sun is in the mood, the breeze whispers fun and the warm smile of the local seal the deal. So without much word, we started our tour . We trailed  all the way up to the mountain and in the sleepy village of Barangay Pandan , Mambajao for our first destination. “Considered as one of the treasured gifts nature has bestowed Camiguin” said our tour guide and driver.

I love the rustic feel the island is giving me, serene coastlines bedecked with coconut trees and the lush vegetation of the back drop of the volcanic mountain was picture perfect.

 

While we are heading to the waterfalls, we found this kid at the sidewalk. Smiling at us from a far we got intrigue. As we comes close, we decided to check what he is bringing. Thankfully, the group is glad to find he is selling some bananas. It’s an answered prayer since we are a little hungry also. *giggles  Anyway, his bananas are at premium quality and sold in cut-rate price in contrast in the city.

Surpisingly,  he is very talkative and bubbly than the other young kids we’ve met in the island. Because his charismatic, the group decided to buy all his bananas. In order for him to rest and went back home early.Happily we bade goodbye to this kiddo!

After that little chit chat with the kiddo, we failed to realized we have reached our destination and we now just a stone throw away to the stunning Katigbawasan falls of Camiguin.

Katigbawasan Falls is considered as one of the treasured gift of nature

There it was perfectly nestled at foot of verdant mountain ranges of Mt. Tipoong was an oasias dripping at about 250 feet high of Katibawasan falls, you’ll see drizzling waters glimmering as the sun stroke at the thread-like fineness of the water.

The water  is clear in fact you see the rocky bottom of the pool with ice-cold level, giving you a chill with a rich faunas around it was a magnificent scenery.

Staring the falls , I am so glad to see this treasure of the island of Camiguin myself with my own eyes. I appreciate the beauty of God and his creation and how the people of this place , were able to maintain and keep the order of the wonderful little paradise.

If you intend to have a picnic or lunch around the falls. Do not worry there have been some rock picnic tables, seats and cookout facilities are available for use with minimal charges. However, if you want to have snacks and grab a light meal only there are some stalls near the place .

In our case, we have decided to try their local delicacy called “Kiping.” It crepe made from cassava topped with a generous amount of caramelized sugar. It is a popular local snacks but I think it could be a perfect dessert.hehe Note: It’s kinda big like the size of a regular plate. 🙂

How to get there

By Air. Take a flight to Cagayan de Oro city from Manila, Ilo-ilo

By Sea. Cebu or by ship from Cebu to CDO or  from  Jagna, Bohol direct to Camiguin.

From CDO, take a bus from Agora Bus Terminal going to Balingoan approximately 2 hours bus trip.

Then take a barge or ferry to Camiguin island.It is an hour to an hour and a half cruising.

  • For the independent backpack traveler, the falls can be reached by a quick multicab ride from the port.
  • It’s a wise choice to haggle first before acquiring someones services.
  • Transportation estimated rate: Motorcycle: Php 400-500 a day, Motorela (tricycle): P800-1000 a day and Multicab: P2000-2500 a day in USD 8.51 – 10.63 , 17.02 – 21.27 and 42.57 – 53.17, respectively.
  • Try their local snack Kipping for only 10.oo
  • Prepare enough cash as it is hard to find ATM in vicinity especially if you are going the mountain side.
  • There are affordable tour packages in the island however DIY tour are highly encouraged for budget traveller
  • The airport is quite far from the city proper approximately an hour drive away by taxi , allocate enough time for this.
  • Remind the driver or conductor of your destination especially going to Balingonan seaport

Marriott’s Kitchen Cook-Off 2015: Chef’s in a battle mode

“Beat the heat” took on a whole new meaning. As four in-house chefs of Cebu City Marriott Hotel compete to become this years “Best Chef.” This exciting kitchen showdown venue is at the Garden Café’ of the hotel. Some exclusive Club Marriott members served as audience to this competition.

All is set. Before the competition start.

Up for the challenge.  The four aspiring chef  must  create a culinary masterpieces using the locally available ingredients . The challenge is to create a mouth-watering appetizer and a savory main dish using the black box challenge:  “bisayang manok” (native chicken) and “molmol” (parrot fish).

The finest kitchen’s best kept secret spices, seasonings and herbs were all made available.  Along with various vegetables and other additions to complete a truly satisfying gastronomic original.

Are you ready to taste the twist of Native Chicken “Bisayang manok” and Parrot fish “molmol”?

The toques and aprons are on.  Let the battle begin. Each must come up with a unique signature  dish.  They are only given  30 minutes to completely prepare, cook and plate two courses. Being there in the audience, I can see the pressure and excitement in everyone’s face.

When the bell rang, all creations paraded before the scrutinizing taste buds of the panel and  the discerning Club Marriott audience. All chefs were judged from the mise-an-place and cleanliness of their working stations, preparation and the over-all presentation and taste of their masterpieces.

In talk with Chachpol Suaisom, Marriots executive chef , he admitted that ““it was a pretty exciting feat watching all my boys apply everything that they’ve learned and compete for the title as best chef.”  He smiles and continues, “ I am happy to attest that our chefs in the hotel are made of a skilled and quality team whose members are all eager to please and satisfy.”

I can not argue more with the chef and I see as the father of the competing chef, he could not be any prouder with the growth his children. Again, this is a competition and one will emerge and take home the most covered title. After careful and thorough deliberation, the winners were declared.

All smile. Cheering everyone for a job well done!

The moment of truth. The crowd favorite Chef John Ryan German nailed it, his  creation bested all others. He took home Php 5,000 pesos as his prize and the glory of being Marriot Cebu’s “Best Chef” tittle. On the other hand, Xyrene John Lou Duque, Henry Hallarte and Ralphban Ricuplaza  landed into first, second and third places respectively.

According to Bill Marriott’s blog, the inspiration for the contest came from the region-wide cooking contest in Marriott kitchens across Europe. Teams of chefs were given a box filled with random ingredients that they used to create a three-course meal.
